When should you switch Medicare plans or supplements?

Some people may be able to stick with the same Medicare Advantage plan or Medicare supplement for many years, however, the majority of people will benefit from switching as plans benefits change and as their own needs, doctors, and medications change.

First: What are the factors when looking for the right Medicare plan?

Many factors come into play when determining the right plan for you. The first thing that comes into play is eligibility. Certain plans are only available in certain areas. Depending on where you live will determine what plan options there are out there for you. Your household income and your health are the other eligibility factors. If you make what Medicare considers “too much” you may not be able to do specific plans.

It is important to make sure your medications and your doctors are covered under your desired plan. Your local agent can review your doctors and medications to make sure they are covered under the plans you are considering.

Each plan has its own unique benefits that may or may not appeal to your wants, needs, and budget. One Medicare plan may have more money available for monthly spending cards while another may have better dental benefits but a lower amount for the monthly spending card. Due to this and due to every individual having unique medical needs, there is no “best” plan. If you ever receive a call from an agent trying to sell you the plan claiming it’s the “best plan for the year” take it with a grain of salt. Your needs cannot be grouped with every other individual that needs a Medicare plan.

When should you look into switching.

Anytime there is a change with your medications or doctors, give your local agent a call to make sure they’re still covered. Even if you don’t make any changes though, your plan can still change year to year. It doesn’t hurt to review your plan every year to make sure there are not any changes that are more harmful than switching to an alternative plan or supplement. The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) takes place from October 15th to December 7th each year. This is a great opportunity to get with your local agent to see if you need to look into another plan or if you’re good with where you are! Changes made during the annual enrollment period will take place at the very beginning of the next calendar year. The sooner you contact your agent during the annual enrollment period the better! If your agent has your best interest in mind, they will only switch you if it benefits you!
